876 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Tremor Trouble
Location: Versailles Main Starfleet Transporter Room
Timeline: Current

He had heard people describe the sensation of the rematerialisation process of the transporter as a tingling throughout the body, which was something Richard had never understood. For him, the hum of the transporter coils generate a warm relaxing sensation across his extremities.

As his vision cleared and his new location came into focus, he noticed straight away the General awaiting him at the foot of the transporter pad.

"General" Richard stepped down to the General's level, "Nice to see you again." His fresh Lt Commander pips and security department uniform glinted under the roof lights.

"Again, Commander?" asked the General, feeling a little wrong-footed. This was, to his knowledge, the first time he'd met the man.

Around them, the General's close-protection detail loitered in the corners of the room. Two would normally stay close, ready to extract the man while the other two laid down fire support from a distance. This time they were all under orders to hang back, as greeting a new department head with the scowls from two surly marines was liable to offend.

The room's other occupants were the transporter operator for the room, and a pair of engineers waiting for the officers to finish their business. The room's hardware was down for routine maintenance, which had been suspended at the General's orders. He'd needed a transporter room at the last minute, and this maintenance had been the least important thing he could interrupt. The other rooms were booked solid beaming materials *in*, for the refugees to eat and sleep on, and people *out*, as the station's more transitory occupants hastened the end of their stay to avoid the refugee hordes expected soon.

Groves chuckled broadly. "Sorry Sir. I say that to every new person I meet. Let's get a feel for what kind of character they are. The fact that you straight up questioned my familiarity let me know that you're a no-nonsense type of a person."

"Lieutenant Commander Richard Groves, reporting as ordered. Permission to come onboard Sir?" Groves snapped to attention.

"...Granted. Good to have you with us." replied the General. His expression wasn't any more tired than it had been a minute ago, but the Commander's use of mind games sure hadn't lightened his frown any. Fortunately, people (admirals, ship captains, someone's yeoman, etc) had been dicking with him over subspace for the past three hours solid, so this didn't bother him.

"I'd like to thank you for this opportunity General. I've not had a whole lot of time to get up to speed on the current security situation, but I've requested a meeting with the the Assistant Security Officer and the Constable of the Civilian Police Force." Richard stepped down from the transporter padd, meeting the General at his side. "Is there anything specific I need to know sir? What are your orders?"

"Containment, in a nutshell. YaDalla is suffering from a global catastrophe, the details of which are in your database. We roped a lot of ships into helping, and the first wave of refugee ships will arrive soon. Unfortunately, YaDalla's security is full of holes right now, and we need those ships back to YaDalla asap, so we're sealing a chunk of the station to act as a refugee camp in lieu of proper entry screening. Aside from Starfleet personnel, nobody goes in, and nobody comes out unless your people have checked them. Oh, and try to keep things peaceful in there. Last thing we need is a riot." said the General.

"I"ll draft in support from the Civilian PD and introduce myself to the team. When is the first convoy due?" As they exited into the main corridor, the General's security team followed at a short distance. "The Alliance is beaming my belongings directly to my quarters. I'll have to have someone meet Luna, she'll be thrown off by the move."

"Three hours. It's why I pushed to get you here so fast." the General told him, waving his bodyguards to close in. He had more than enough to handle before the refugees arrived, and it didn't help that his CEO, CMO, and XO were now en-route to (or already on) YaDalla. It was the right call letting them go, but it wasn't the easy option.

Plus, the fate of his Chief of Operations had everyone on edge. Her comatose form was being carried by one of the escort vessels for the refugee fleet, and the General needed someone with their eyes fixed on the refugees. Grief and worry was clouding the minds of those that knew her, which made the job harder. At least the newcomer would lack that particular distraction, he mused.

The sudden arrival of his men jarred the General from this line of thought, as they closed in.

"Sorry to end this so soon; I have a meeting in three minutes with the station quartermaster. Good luck." the General offered, nodding in encouragement.

"I look forward to working with you Sir. " The Lieutenant Commander give his new Commanding Officer a reciprocal nod. As the General walked in one direction, Richard started off down the corridor looking for the nearest turbolift.
