Personality & Traits

General Overview Kya’shina is strong-willed, stubborn, and fierce. She still has a volatile temper, but she had learned how to control it. Where she had always been the followed to her sister, she has now grown to be a steady mind capable of leading others. Her more empathetic nature, at least when compared to her twin, has provided her with the balance necessary to a life as an officer and commander.

History

Personal History Kya’shina Tenatha, and her twin sister Dene’thala, were born on 238304.16 (by the Federation calendar) in the village of Melcear in one of the deserts of the planet Sal’kiir.

Sal’kiir is a volatile world and every environment is intense, but the deserts more than most. The birth and survival rates are very low, but the twins were some of the lucky ones. Being twins alone was a rarity, but that they both survived their childhood was just as unusual. It set them apart from the rest.

The twins didn’t know who their father was, and their mother tended to them only as much as need be. The sisters mostly took care of themselves.

Like most born in the Sal’kiiran deserts, also known as the fire regions, the twins grew up strong, fierce, and temperamental, with often violent and unpredictable tempers. They rarely left one another’s sides, and they were stronger—in all ways—when they were together. Dene tended to be the leader of the pair, and the most troublesome, but Kya followed easily and without complaint. She tended to be the more empathetic and considerate of the two, particularly when not around her sister.

As they grew in to adolescence, they went from beautiful children to beautiful women. The men of the fire regions were drawn to them and as most of the fire Sal'kiirans are, they were pushy. Dene and Kya did not take kindly to this and often got in to fights, leaving everyone involved with bruises, broken bones, and burns. By the age of seventeen, they'd left the fire regions for the cities, but found attention drawn even there.

When Dene and Kya were eighteen, they made the decision to leave Sal'kiir together and find a new path away from their home system, which is very rare for Sal’kiirans but happens. But they were determined. It took them a while, moving from job to job, until they decided to go to Earth. They were twenty years old then. By sheer happenstance, they learned of Starfleet Academy and were drawn to the Marines. The two had been continually seeking ways of being stronger and tougher, and this was it.

They enrolled in two years at the academy with other enlisted. After that, there was another six months of basic training. The pair did well in training, but were known as a bit of a discipline case—particularly early on—because of their tempers and tendency to be violent when it came out.

They did well enough, however, and managed to calm down. They came to learn that they were stronger together and were typically able to gain posts together for medical reasons. They excelled on colony-based posts, although they did well wherever they were put. Their innate Sal’kiiran abilities could be an asset, at times, and their strength and tenacity helped at other times.

Eventually, Kya’shina would take a slightly different path. For the first time, pretty much ever, the two would be separated. Kya chose to pursue Officer’s Candidacy School, and Dene chose to take a long leave to go back home to Sal’kiir for a time.

Once she graduated and was granted her officer’s rank, Dene’thala returned and the two resumed their path. This time, with a different division of tasks and positions—Dene often in a supporting role to Kya, as a rather different take on their lives up until that point.
