Fourteen Hours and Thirty Seven Minutes

1,549 words; about a 8 minute read

Mission: The Sincerest Form of Flattery
Location: Sickbay

Elyse had been on the Starbase for precisely fourteen hours and thirty seven minutes.

It had been precisely eight minutes after her arrival that she found herself questioning what kind of fresh hell she had come into.

It had been fourty two minutes after her arrival that she had seen two Klingon's beat down a passing Vulcan while no body batted an eyelid.

It had been five hours and twenty seven minutes after her arrival that she had found herself pressed against a bulkhead while security officers barrelled past her in pursuit of what looked like a half human half romulan changeling caught mid change.

It had been eight hours and thirteen minutes after her arrival that she had asked for her THIRD assignment for quarters after the first two were completely non functional in any way.

It had been nine hours and fifty eight minutes after her arrival that she finally fell into a horribly uncomfortable bed, barely daring to close her eyes.

It had been thirteen hours and forty five minutes after her arrival that she realised that her sonic shower was not working.

It had been fourteen hours and six minutes after her arrival that her entire quarters was thrown into brown out while she tried to replicate a cup of coffee to help offset the fatigue she could already feel setting in.

All of which was why, now, at precisely fourteen hours and thirty seven minutes after her arrival on the starbase she found herself standing outside sickbay, trying to decide if she was going to walk in and find her new boss or head straight back to that cute officer from Operations and ask for an immediate transfer out of there.

With a sigh, the hope of a functioning replicator and the desire for caffeine won out and she walked into sickbay, glancing around at the chaos within. "Excuse me?" she approached the first person she saw who didn't immediately appear to be with a patient. "I'm looking for the Chief Medical Officer?"

A nurse stopped and looked at the obviously tired and fatigued Elyse that stood before him. He was carrying two PADDs in each hand, trying to read the information that was displayed on them. "She's over there," he said with a soft, gentle warming voice that accompanied his lifted hand that formed a finger, struggling to keep his grip on the PADD, he pointed towards Sarah who was currently dealing with a child with a broken leg.

Sarah looked determined in her work, but upon hearing her name by the nurse, she stopped for a moment, looked to her right and saw a new face, in a Medical Officer's uniform... "Come on over" Sarah vocalised with a loud, but not shouting volume and a smile. She returned her attention to the leg she was straightening, she waited for the new Medical Officer to join her by her side.

Walking across sickbay, doing her best to stay out of everyone's way, Elyse stifled a yawn before forcing a bright smile on her face, looking at the small boy looking afraid on the bio bed. Noting the lack of parents or guardians, she assumed the child had likely come from the school room and parents would be there sooner or later. Moving to the other side of the bed, she sat very carefully on the edge of the bio bed, addressing the child first. "Let me guess, you were trying to fly like batman?" she said with a teasing grin.

"But Batman doesn't fly!" the boy retorted with a laugh.

"I know," Elyse replied with a wink. "If he could fly you wouldn't be here!"

"But I'm not Batman!" The boy retorted with a fresh peal of laughter, broken only by a grimace as Sarah reset the bone.

Squeezing his hand gently, Elyse leaned in a little closer, trying to distract him. "Are you sure about that? I mean... I'm not saying you're not Batman... and I'm not saying you ARE Batman... all I'm saying is that I've never seen you and Batman in the same place at the same time."

With the worst of the moment over, Elyse finally turned her attention to Sarah, smiling warmly. "Elyse Mattews, new victim, err, sorry, I mean new medical officer" she said easily. "But I feel much better now knowing that we have Batman here on the station."

Sarah smirked, noting the excellent patient orientated skills of her new Medical Officer. "This is Tommy, he had a spiral tib fib fracture to his leg so we're gonna be putting it right and then fixing it up." she replied to the new medical officer, "I'm Sarah the Chief Medical Officer, but I'm guessing you knew that since you're here " she chuckled at her need to clarify her position here, she turned her attention back to Tommy, "She has a point... I've never seen you and Batman in the same place at the same time either..." she winked towards the boy.

Sarah set up the osteotractors that held the now set bone in place, immobilised. She reached over to a clinical table full of tools and grabbed the Anabolic Protoplaser that lay there, as she waved it over the injured limb the pain could be seen to resolve itself from the boys face.

"We'll give that just a few minutes, and then you'll be up and ready to go in no time, Batman... I mean, Tommy.." she chuckled. She handed over the patient to a nearby nurse and offered the new Medical Officer to come with her, as she began walking to her office.

"I'll keep your secret, I promise," Elyse said with a wink as she headed away from the little boy and followed Sarah to her office. "I don't suppose you have a functioning replicator down here do you?" she asked hopefully.

"We couldn't live without one, I'm sure our replicator see's more coffee produced here than any other replicator in the facility" she chuckled, she raised her arm and pointed to the replicator. "Meet me in my office, when you're done" Sarah said softly as she headed towards her office.

The news that there was coffee made Elyse so happy she could have cried. Replicating a triple shot espresso in a cup, she picked it up, inhaling the heavenly scent, cradling the cup lovingly in her hands as she headed back to the CMO's office. "Sorry," she said apologetically. "It was a long night and my replicator caused a brown out this morning so I didn't get coffee before I came down here."

"It's fine" she chuckled, "I know the feeling... I practically live on the stuff and become a right antsy woman if I don't have my coffee..." she replied as she smelled the scent of the coffee, she sighed and appeared to be in a blissful euphoria. "Welcome to the Medical Team of the Versailles, I'm you're Chief Medical Officer, we have no ACMO at present, so I'm your direct line... Do you have any questions or anything I can help with?" Sarah asked softly, with an obvious compassionate tone.

Sipping the super strength coffee, Elyse sighed contentedly. "Oh thank the Gods," she murmured softly. "Honestly, if I couldn't get a coffee here I would have been on the first transport out. As it is I'm still questioning the sanity in staying!"

Sarah nodded in agreement, "I felt the same when I first arrived, it's quite the hectic station and I can't promise it'll be the best time of your life however, you will learn and you will be busy... There's no time to second guess yourself" she chuckled and continued "I do hope you decide to stay and enjoy it for a little while first, though?" Sarah questioned, inhaling another breath of coffee scented air.

"Well, my transport left almost an hour ago, so I don't have much choice at least for the moment," Elyse replied with a laugh before taking another sip of coffee. "But yeah, it's been a pretty rocky start so far. What the hell is going on here?"

"So, we've currently got two sick children and our Chief Engineering Officer in with us due to an unknown fever, and I can't yet figure out what's causing it... We've got a few minor injuries and a few plasma injuries, we've just recently had an assassination attempt on the General, a successful assassination of the ACMO and to top it all off we've got things running around hiding as other species, which are actually Romulan mimic agents... So all fun on deck I suppose..." she chuckled to herself.

"What would you like to do first, you can take shift or head back to quarters to try and relax first?" Sarah asked

"I'm already here, I may as well stay and take a shift," Elyse replied with a smile. "Besides, sickbay has coffee," she finished with a laugh. "And it looks like you need the help here anyway."

“Lovely, come with me and I’ll introduce you to Ky’La.” Sarah said with a smile as she offered Elyse a PADD, “Her case notes to read on the way”.
